The Spotted Hyena
The spotted hyena is a wild dog. It is the biggest in the hyena family. Like a wolf, it hunts in packs and is an omnivore. Spotted hyenas are also called laughing hyenas because their bark sounds like a laugh. One of the spotted hyena's favourite snack would be a gazelle.They also like to eat rabbits, buffalo and zebras.
Facts about spotted hyenas
- Female hyenas give birth to twins in shallow holes near their den.
- After catching their prey, they sometimes have a game of 'tug of war' with other animals to see who will win the meat.
- Some times they even eat garbage from nearby towns!
- The scientific name for the spotted hyena is Crocuta crocuta.
- The aardwolf is the spotted hyena's closest relative.
